Friday, July 22 - PENINSULA CRUISE - Port Angeles, WA to Astoria, OR

<<

>>

Port Angeles, across the Straight of Juan de Fuca from Victoria, BC, Canada, is the gateway to the Olympic National Park, and home to the oldest Coast Guard station in the United States.

We spend the day cruising the Olympic Peninsula, the large section of land in western Washington that lies across Puget Sound from Seattle. It is bounded on the west by the Pacific Ocean, the north by the Strait of Juan de Fuca, and the east by Hood Canal. Comprising about 3600 square miles, the Olympic Peninsula contained many of the last unexplored places in the contiguous United States. It remained largely unmapped until 1900.

Forks, Washington is named after the forks in the nearby Quillayute, Bogachiel, Calawah, and Sol Duc rivers.  Forks is the setting for the popular Twilight series of books and Films.

We’ll cross the Columbia River on the 4 mile long, two lane wide Astoria-Megler, the longest continuous truss bridge in North America. We leave Washington on the north end of the bridge, and enter Oregon on the south end. We’ll spend the night in Astoria, Oregon, where Lewis and Clarke hit the Pacific Ocean in 1805, and home of the first U.S. Post Office west of the Rocky Mountains.

Astoria has a fascinating history.

8:00am - Everybody meets up with the Straight Air Volksgruppe VW Club at Ediz Hook in Port Angeles, WA

9:00am - We're on the road for the start of the annual Airhead Parts Vintage Volkswagen Highway 1 Treffen #24 Border to Border Cruise!

11:00-12:00pm -  Lunch in Forks, WA

Since the old Forks Cafe shut down, there isn’t a spot large enough to seat us all in Forks.  We’ll split up and grab what we feel like before regrouping at the south end of town.  It's a little early, but there isn't much south of here except forest for a good while.

If you need gas before we get to Aberdeen (175 miles from the start), stop at the Shell (right side) or the Tessoro (left side) right as we hit town.

Here’s a few food options:

Sully’s Burgers

Taqueria Santa Ana

Benellis Burgers

In Place

We’ll leave from the Mocha Motion coffee shack parking lot, next door to the In Place.

Out at 12:00pm

2:45pm - Gas/Rest:

AM/PM

705 W Heron St, Aberdeen, WA 98520

Out at 3:15

5:30pm - Arrive Astoria

6:30pm - Dinner:

Fort George

1483 Duane St

Astoria, OR

97103

It’s the longest day of Treffen, so we may or may not get in a little late.  We’ve arrived early and late in the past, depends on how fast we get through the earlier stops, traffic, road construction, pirates, etc.  If we're on time to Astoria, I plan to check in to the hotel first.  If we're late, we should still make dinner more or less on time.
