Saturday, July 22 - Astoria to Coos Bay, OR
235 miles (this is the 2nd longest day of Treffen)
Gas/Rest 1 at 70 miles from start in Tillamook
Captain Robert Gray first anchored in Tillamook Bay in 1788, marking the first recorded European landing on the Oregon coast. Settlers began arriving in the early 1850s, and Tillamook County was created by the Territorial legislature in 1853. In 1862, the town itself was laid out, and the first post office was opened in 1866. The area was originally home to the Yacona tribe, whose history can be traced back at least 3000 years.
We'll stop for the day in Coos Bay. Population 15,985, it is the most populous city on the Oregon Coast. Another PNW coastal town with a long, interesting history.

Breakfast:
We’ve outgrown the Pig and Pancake parking lot, which is too bad because…. Pancakes! I’ll probably still try to get in there for a quick bite, there just isn't room in the parking lot for us all to gather there. Plan to eat where you like, then gather at the morning meeting spot.
8:00am - Morning Meetup:
Wal-Mart parking lot, over the bridge, south of Astoria.
1791 SE Ensign Ln
Warrenton, OR 97146
Easy gas at the Fred Meyer on the right, just as you get over the bridge in to Warrenton. WalMart is a few blocks further down on the left. The parking lot is bigger and there’s coffee next door. There’s a Costco gas right there too if you have a Costco card. Out at 9:00.
9:00am - On the road
10:30-11:00am
Tillamook is just 60 miles down the road, but stopping here splits up the drive to Newport. Even if you don't need gas, it's a good spot to stretch your legs and maybe grab something from the store. Looks like there's lots of room at the north end of the parking lot.
Fred Meyer Fuel Center (south end of parking lot)
2500 N Main Ave, Tillamook, OR 97141
Head back to the north end of the parking lot after getting gas, there's a lot more room at that end.
12:30-1:30pm - Lunch
We'll gather up in the Safeway parking lot at 2220 N Coast Hwy, Newport, OR 97365. There's a couple of options for food nearby, though most folks seem to hit the Safeway. Wherever you eat, we'll leave from here at 1:30 and head 1/2 mile south to get gas.
1:45-2:00pm - Gas
Fred Meyer Fuel Center
1359 N Coast Hwy, Newport, OR 97365
3:00-3:30am – Gas/Rest Stop:
More of a rest stop than a gas stop, but there's pumps here. Fred Meyer probably has bathrooms and there's an Oreilly's Auto Parts store in the same parking lot if anyone needs some coolant. We can drag this out a little longer if anyone needs stuff from the Fred Meyer. It's like a Target and a WalMart combined, a great place to stock up on whatever you can think of.
